Overall I found the article very interesting. One part I found particularly interesting was on page three when the topic is discussed on
The Preparation of a Speech. These classical methods for breaking down a speech to insure everything is covered are still used today, I'm sure. Invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery are very important aspects of any speech given today, well almost any speech today. The memorization part doesn't seem so prevalent with the use of a teleprompter finding its way into many speeches today.
I also found the classical methods for preparing a speech an interesting topic. I discussed in my own blog the importance of classical methods, and how teachers should incorporate such methods into their discussions. However, I feel that memorization can have a significant role in today’s media driven society: conferences and expos are two likely examples that use memorization as a tool in preparing a speech.
ReplyDeleteHi Brady,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to our English 3341 blog!!! Am glad you brought up the 5 canons for speech prep as these are indeed important landmark for rhetorical studies then and now. Aristotle provided specific methodologies began by Plato and Socrates and while his treatises are not considered speeches, his notes contain basic concepts that prevail through time.
Very interesting take on Memory and its application to the contemporary period. At some point, some post-Aristotelian scholars view that as something that can be connected to Invention because writers/speakers tap into their memory to develop appropriate arguments and topoi (commonplace topics) in the process. Maybe this gap -- how memory is applicable to contemporary rhetoric -- is something worthy of further extrapolations in your future readings(?). At any rate, do keep an open mind as we plow through more treatises and articles from different rhetors.
Good luck and keep blogging!! I may not respond to each of your entries but am reading them and looking at how you expand the Unit questions in our syllabus. ;)
